During the 1973 volcanic eruption on Heimaey Island, three siblings are sent to the Westfjords for safekeeping, where their welcome is far from warm. Fifty years
later, one returns to work on a remote mountain road, just as human remains are uncovered nearby. Bergur takes the case, quietly assisted by Ragna, but local police seem reluctant to dig deep, not least because one of their own has a personal stake in the past. When a second body turns up at a nearby power station, old grievances resurface, and Bergur is certain of the truth before he can prove it.
