A seven-year manhunt for a killer who vanished into plain sight, and the detective who made a promise he refuses to break.

On Halloween night 2005, a hit-and-run driver kills seven-year-old Snaedis Erla as she cycles home in a witch costume bought hours earlier. Detective Hordur Grimsson holds her as she dies and promises her parents he will find the man responsible, whatever it takes.

The only witness is unreliable, the car is never traced, and the case goes cold within weeks, but Hordur cannot let it go. Over the following years he works a string of other investigations, a staged double suicide, a disappearance beneath the glacier at Snaefellsnes, a fatal fall between old friends, while the hunt for the unnamed driver quietly shapes his marriage, his fatherhood, and his slow slide into drink.

When the truth finally surfaces, it forces a reckoning neither man can escape. A slow-burning, deeply human crime novel about grief, obsession, and a promise kept.

★★★★★
“Stefan Mani has not only created Hordur Grimsson, a detective in the Reykjavík Police Research Department, but has also nurtured him, kept him focused, and rendered him unforgettable in the crime fiction genre. Forget Me Not is yet another testament to this, featuring both of them—the author and the book’s protagonist—at the top of their game.”
