When Bergthora, the widow in Hvammur comes upon a body in the open field, she immediately sees that the man has been murdered. She also knows that several of the people from the neighbouring farms bore a deep grudge against him. Not long before, a trial had taken place in Hvammur parish, where destitute individuals received unbearably harsh sentences for minor offenses. Many have wrongs to avenge, and more people may be in danger than just the corpse that lies before Bergthora in the first snow of winter.
Revenge Is Mine is the sequel to When Truth Sleeps, continuing the story of criminal investigations and romantic entanglements of the widow in Hvammur. At the same time, it sheds light on 18th-century morality and justice, particularly the social inequities that wealth and family background created when the rod of the law came down.
“Nanna has an exceptional talent for creating atmosphere, believable characters, and a coherent, thrilling story. … All the characters in this tale are drawn in such a magnificent way that they come alive in one’s imagination. Furthermore, they are all interesting and memorable. … It’s an incredibly vibrant and lively text. There’s always a spark of humor. This story is both colorful, exciting, and entertaining. … I would love to see it on stage or adapted into a film.”

“The historical chapters seem well-founded, as they are based on real-life criminal cases … The story world is well-built, and it is written with knowledge of the customs and habits of former times. The crime plot itself is well-grounded in the story, and the resolution managed to surprise me. The historical setting puts the criminal cases in a different context and feels well-researched and vivid.”

“[The Fires Within] is an exciting, funny, and sad story of a strong woman who refuses to be a victim. If this book isn’t among the most popular in the Christmas book flood, I’ll be surprised.”
