(b.1972) is one of Iceland’s most versatile writers, working across children’s literature, YA fiction, biography, and Icelandic art history.

She has authored four books on Icelandic visual art in collaboration with the country’s major art museums, including a widely praised biography of painter Jóhannes Kjarval, which formed the basis for the play Kjarval at the Reykjavík City Theatre in 2021.

With illustrator Linda Ólafsdóttir, she has created two acclaimed nonfiction books for young readers, Here is Iceland! and Here is Reykjavík!, both winners of the Reykjavík Children’s Book Award and the Icelandic Women’s Literature Prize; Here is Iceland! has also appeared in English, French, and Italian editions. Her picture books include Searching for Snoozy, a warm, character-driven story about friendship.

More recently, Margrét has turned to fast-paced YA fiction in the Nordic Noir tradition, with novels such as Strong and Proud earning the Guðrún Helgadóttir Literary Prize, the Icelandic Booksellers’ Prize, and further nominations for the Icelandic Literature Prize.

Margrét has also worked as an editor, translator, and columnist, and served as a Member of the Icelandic Parliament from 2009 to 2013. She currently chairs the Icelandic Writers’ Union.
