We are thrilled to announce that the television rights for Joachim Schmidt’s esteemed Kalmann series, including Kalmann and Kalmann and the Sleeping Mountain, have been acquired by Kontent. Renowned for its distinctive blend of heartwarming and comedic elements, the Kalmann series stands out in the Nordic crime thriller genre, eschewing gratuitous violence and exploitative content in favor of tight plotting, suspense, and a profound sense of empathy.
At the heart of the series is Kalmann Odinsson, a character whose mental challenges are portrayed with remarkable empathy, humor, and psychological nuance. Dubbed the Swiss and Icelandic counterpart to Forrest Gump, Kalmann embodies an extraordinary protagonist whose unique perspective and actions unfailingly bring about resolution in the most unexpected ways.
Kristofer Dignus, the series’ director, praises the show for its authentic depiction of Icelandic society through the lens of Kalmann’s adventures. “Kalmann offers a profound insight into Icelandic culture, showcasing the eccentricities, complexities, and uniqueness of its people, with Kalmann himself standing out as the most unlikely yet endearing hero,” Dignus remarks.
The Kalmann series has garnered international acclaim, with translations into eleven languages to date. RLA manages the Scandinavian rights to the books, which continue to captivate and entertain audiences across the globe.
